Full description

Discover one of the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites when visiting the Mont-Saint-Michel abbey. The veneration of Saint Michel was introduced to the sacred mountain in 708 and became one of the most important pilgrimage sites of the Middle Ages. Benedictine monks started building an abbey here in the 10th century.

The abbey withstood the attacks of man, time and elements. The mountain's heroic resistance to English attacks during the Hundred Years War (14th and 15th centuries) made it a symbol of French national identity. The monks left the abbey in 1790 and it was listed as a historical monument in 1874. Thanks to ongoing restoration work, the entire site has returned to its former glory.
