In the historic palace on the right bank of the Seine you can admire sights such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Discover masterpieces of the Renaissance and ancient Egyptian relics, paintings from the 13th to the 20th centuries, prints from the Royal Collection and much more.

The museum was opened on August 10, 1793 with an exhibition of only 537 paintings. Although it was closed in 1796 due to structural problems, it was reopened in 1801 as the Musée Napoléon with a larger collection. Many works were confiscated and returned to their original owners following the defeat of Napoleon in Waterloo.

The collection was during the reign of Louis XVIII. And Charles X. expanded, and during the Second French Empire the museum received 20,000 pieces. The stock has grown steadily since the Third Republic, and since 2008, the collection has been divided into 8 curatorial departments: Egyptian Antiquities; Antiquities of the Middle East; Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities; Islamic art; Sculpture; Decorative art; Painting; and prints and drawings.
